Power Outages Disrupt Austin and San Marcos, Texas
Thousands of Central Texas residents faced a challenging morning on Friday, January 23, 2026, as widespread power outages affected the region. At 9:41 a.m., Austin Energy reported an alarming 7,071 customers without electricity, primarily in the south and southeast areas of Austin. This crisis was triggered by a unique combination of factors.
According to CBS Austin Meteorologist Avery Tomasco, the recent drought has led to a significant accumulation of dust and pollen on power line insulators. When the morning drizzle and mist mixed with this buildup, it created a conductive slurry, causing electrical shorts and fires. Tomasco clarified that this event was not related to a winter storm, but rather the result of power pole fires.
The situation in San Marcos was equally dire. The San Marcos Police Department confirmed that multiple electric pole fires erupted around 4:15 a.m. near State Highway 123, between Rattler Road and Wonder World Drive. The Bluebonnet Electric Cooperative reported over 2,500 outages in the area, leaving thousands without power.
These incidents highlight the vulnerability of power infrastructure to environmental conditions. The unique combination of drought, dust, and moisture led to a critical situation, causing significant disruptions for residents in both Austin and San Marcos. The authorities and utility companies are working to restore power and investigate the causes of these fires.
