Unveiling the Magic of Color: A London Home's Transformation
A bold statement in blue unites this London home's fragmented spaces, creating a captivating narrative.
Local studio Nimtim Architects has breathed new life into a London residence, transforming its small and disjointed ground-floor areas into a cohesive living space. The project, aptly named "Peek-a-Blue," revolves around the addition of a spacious, almost double-height "snug" at the heart of the home, seamlessly connecting it to the newly expanded kitchen and dining area at the rear.
To address a one-meter drop from the front of the house to the garden, the studio ingeniously lowered the floor in the snug, ensuring direct access from the kitchen. Project architect Pippa Grayson explains, "The main concept was to create a living space that reflects the family's lifestyle, with a direct connection to the garden."
At the rear, the Peek-a-Blue extension boasts an earthy clay render exterior, accentuated by full-height openings and a porthole window framed in vibrant ultramarine blue. Inside, the kitchen and dining area feature light blue cabinetry, recycled plastic countertops, and gridded clay tiles that flow throughout the home.
A unique benched seating area, crowned with a semi-circular skylight, runs along the space, adding a touch of elegance. Grayson describes the overall design as "a rich and textural palette of reds and ochres that unites the new living spaces."
But here's where it gets controversial... The visual connections within the home are highlighted by the bold ultramarine frames and reveals of the new openings. A steel-framed opening connects the extension to the two-storey snug, designed as the home's focal point. Boxy windows wrap around the snug, offering glimpses of the staircase and creating a visual link between the spaces.
"The bright blue punched openings between the spaces and the staircase address any sense of disconnect," Grayson adds.
The bedrooms are located on the upper floors, with other updated spaces, including a bathroom clad entirely in pink tiles.
