The Ger Plug-In 3.0, designed by the District Development Unit, is a groundbreaking initiative led by architects Joshua Bolchover (Director) and Jersey Poon (Project Lead). With a team including Minjmaa Enkhbat and implementation partners Energy Efficient Design Build LLC (Dulguun Batkhishig and Erdembileg Nemekhbaatar), this project aims to address the dire living conditions in Ulaanbaatar’s ger districts. Community partner Gerhub NGO (Uurtsaikh Sangi, Temuulen Enkhbat) ensures the project remains rooted in local needs.
Completed in 2023 and spanning 100 m², the project tackles the district’s most pressing issues head-on. For instance, the average household burns 4.1 tons of coal annually for heating, contributing to severe air pollution that devastates health. The Ger Plug-In 3.0 introduces energy-efficient designs to reduce reliance on coal, while also exploring solutions for sanitation and water access.
